A £50,000 grant from the National Lottery Community Fund will help Surrey Community Action to expand its successful Money Matters project.
The project provides free and accessible practical sessions that make day to day budgeting and saving money easier to understand to help make communities more resilient.
The new funding from The National Lottery Community Fund, which distributes money raised by National Lottery players for good causes and is the largest community funder in the UK, will see more people in Surrey benefit from advice to help their money go further.
Due to the current social distancing restrictions, group sessions have been suspended but advice is being provided via email and video conferencing and over the telephone. The support on offer includes fuel poverty and energy advice, general family budgeting, scam awareness and living on a low income to help vulnerable people to avoid spiralling further into poverty and debt.
David Carter, Surrey Community Action’s Money Matters Adviser says: “The full economic effects of the lockdown are unknown, but as the furlough scheme ends we expect that many more people will be unemployed and living on tighter budgets. Thanks to National Lottery players, we can reach more people to provide advice that will make day to day budgeting easier to understand, suggest ways to make personal and family finances go further and help them to avoid scams. As social distancing restrictions ease, we hope to resume our pop-up sessions in community venues but in the meantime people can get in touch via phone or email.”

About The National Lottery Community Fund
We are the largest community funder in the UK – we’re proud to award money raised by National Lottery players to communities across England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland. Since June 2004, we have made over 200,000 grants and awarded over £9 billion to projects that have benefited millions of people.
We are passionate about funding great ideas that matter to communities and make a difference to people’s lives. At the heart of everything we do is the belief that when people are in the lead, communities thrive. Thanks to the support of National Lottery players, our funding is open to everyone. We’re privileged to be able to work with the smallest of local groups right up to UK-wide charities, enabling people and communities to bring their ambitions to life.
