I am writing this slightly before “Unlock Day”, the 19th of July. By the time you read this, we might be looking at a significantly different world. Regardless of our personal opinions about how and when restrictions are lifted, we know it will be an uncomfortable time for many. Throughout COVID, I have spent time at home and in the office. I have had a small number of COVID-safe face-to-face meetings here at Astolat and have enjoyed the company of the occasional visit of colleagues. Compared to many, I have spent a bit of time with quite a few people (safely of course).
On Monday, I had a meeting face-to-face over at the new County Hall with a group of people I had not seen in real life 3D for a year. I was quite excited, and it was great to see them. I was even excited about navigating the M25 (that didn’t last). But I was also surprisingly nervous about being in a room with people again. As I told myself off for being daft, I couldn’t help think about all those who are more vulnerable than me, who have been more isolated than me, and who face more day-to-day challenges than me. How are they going to cope as restrictions ease? Are they going to be left even further behind? How can we help people and bring them with us?
Fortunately, I am privileged to know some great people and organisations who are aware of the challenges and are doing great things to help. To them I offer my thanks!
