Community Buildings case study: St Marks Church
A popular meeting place for many local organisations, St Marks Church Hall, near Tattenham Corner on Epsom Downs was in dire need of refurbishment.
The church, its congregation and the community worked hard to raise funds to help to pay for the building works but the amount raised fell short of what was needed. That’s where the Community Hall Grants Scheme, which is administered by Surrey Community Action on behalf of Surrey County Council, was able to help.
In addition to the funds raised by the congregation, the community and church reserves, the trustees received £15,000 from Surrey County Council which was match funded by Reigate and Banstead Borough Council.
With a total pot of £90,000, the trustees were able to replace the roof and the ceiling as well as install new heating and lighting systems. The hall has been redecorated too, so the twenty or so groups who use the hall every month, which include a puppy training school, dance groups, youth organisations and exercise classes, have a brand new space to meet.
“The Community Hall Grant Scheme added a considerable amount to our fund and we were able to carry out all of the works required to ensure our hall serves the community for another 60 years.”
