Gypsy & Traveller support case study: New beginnings

Losing a partner is devastating whatever the circumstances, but the death of a traveller had an additional impact on his wife and their four children as it left the family with no access to money.

The Traveller Education service was already involved with the family and contacted Surrey Community Action for support. After a numerous joint visits we were able to contact the relevant organisations, re- instate their benefits and get the required health care for the mother.

The result of this partnership working prevented the children from being taken into care which would have added considerable pressure to both the family and social services.

The three youngest children are now stable in school and the eldest son entered a mainstream comprehensive school in September 2013. Surrey Community Action and the Traveller Education service still remain in close contact with each other, and the family, which results in any furthers issues being resolved quickly and positively.
