Congratulations and good luck to Caterham on winning the AMT( Action for Market Towns) regional Category Award for the Caterham Festival of 2009. As winners of the Social and Community category, the successful team, will now go to the regional event taking place in Farringdon in July where they will compete with three other category winners to go forward to represent the South East at the AMT Annual Conference in October. Previous winners of the national ward were, of course Haslemere, with the Rewards card which is still proving to be really popular, and now being emulated in other parts of the country. The second Caterham Festival has just taken place again an amazingly successful event involving huge numbers of people from the local community and providing many different and exciting activities such, as a street party, a carnival, an open weekend, a festival of music , a food festival and an uphill cycle race.

Success for Farmers’ Markets
A ‘fantastic’ farmers’ market in Milford has just harvested a top award. Milford Farmers’ Market, launched a decade ago, has been named the 2010 Certified Farmers’ Market of the Year by the national farmer’s retail and markets association Farma.

Farma's judges praised it as a beacon in the area and were particularly impressed with the way the organisers changed aspects of the market to continually seek improvements, including: hosting events such as Apple Day, Farmhouse Breakfast week, Harvest Festival and school projects all of which generated huge interest from the local community.

Last year the Milford Farmers’ Market became the second only producer-led cooperative group to be established under the making Local Food Work programme to help nature sustainability for all.

Councillor Robert Knowles said: “Milford is more than just a place to buy excellent locally produced food; it is very much at the heart of the community and provides an essential link between farmers and residents from the towns and villages. It has been a useful outlet to support many small family-run farms and businesses.”

Ripley, also in Surrey, was runner up in the event, making it a dual county success.

Making Local Food Work – an exciting project recently launched in Haslemere.
The national programme Making Local Food Work, funded from the Big Lottery, and led by the Plunkett Foundation, has many partners including, the Campaign to Protect Rural England( CPRE), Cooperatives Uk, Country Markets Ltd, FARMA, the Soil Association, and Sustain. The aim of the programme is to secure the long term future of thriving communities that are strongly connected to the land and that understand where their food comes from and can respond to their own needs using community led solutions.

In Haslemere the mapping work, with local volunteers trained by the CPRE regional coordinator, has just started and involves a number of activities in, and around the town and its hinterland. Volunteers are conducting a number of surveys with consumers within a two mile radius. They will then talk to, and survey, all the local food outlets. And finally the producers within a thirty mile radius will also be surveyed. So everyone to have an opportunity to participate.

As a result of all this research, a huge amount of data will be collected showing the connectivity and interdependency between the different players. The findings will be used locally, but will also feed into the national picture. It is hoped that other towns will be encouraged to carry out similar exercises to help build up the “ bigger picture” of our food supply chain so that influence can be brought to bear on local, regional and national policy decisions.
